The most useful all-rounder is Dělám si legraci. — literally “I’m making fun / a joke.” It’s warm, friendly and works in almost any situation.

Dělám si legraci.
I’m (just) kidding. / I’m joking. (neutral, always safe)
Dělám si srandu.
I’m just kidding. (casual — “sranda” is the everyday word for fun)

Add “just” for that softening feel

To get the exact “I’m just kidding” nuance, drop in jen or jenom (“only, just”):

  • Jen si dělám legraci. — I’m just kidding.
  • To byl jen vtip. — That was just a joke.
  • Jen žertuju. — I’m only joking. (a touch more formal — žertovat = to joke)

Teasing a specific person

When you’re kidding someone — pulling their leg — use the preposition z + the person:

Dělám si z tebe legraci.
I’m just teasing you. / I’m pulling your leg. (informal “you”)
Nedělej si ze mě srandu!
Don’t make fun of me! (playful or slightly annoyed, depending on tone)

Calming it down afterwards

  • Neber to vážně. — Don’t take it seriously.
  • Byla to sranda. — It was (just) a joke / a bit of fun.
  • Klid, dělám si legraci. — Relax, I’m kidding.
Register tip: sranda is very common but casual — perfect with friends, a little too relaxed for a formal email. When in doubt, legrace and vtip are the safe, neutral choices.

Master Dělám si legraci first — it’ll get you out of almost any “wait, were you serious?” moment.
